Varun’s Quest

Chapter 1

Wherein We Meet Varun and a Mysterious Dinner Plate

Grandpa could be something of a tease, but on one occasion events took a turn that Varun could not have imagined. It all began on a warm summer evening. The western sky was washed with orange from the setting sun, and the water in the harbor glowed in the reflection. Varun was curled up on the sofa with an electronic game in his hand, intent on getting his race car across the finish line in record time, when Grandpa pointed to the garden.

“Varun, it’s always busy out here at this time of day. There are monarch butterflies on the flowers and a hummingbird at the feeder. A big spider has just built a web in the blueberry bush, too. They’re all looking for a snack before it gets dark. When it gets a bit darker the bats will also be hunting. And look, there’s even a swarm of bees in the apple tree.”

“Oh, Grandpa! Not right now.” Varun’s race car survived a sharp curve, accelerated down a straightaway, and he continued jabbing at the controls.

Grandpa smiled and went to the dish cupboard. He took out one of the plates, brought it to the sofa, and sat next to Varun. Varun sighed as his race car careened into a ditch. He rolled his eyes, put down his game, and gave Grandpa a slice of his attention.

“Look at this plate.” Grandpa pointed. “You and I are in this picture.”

Varun had seen the plate before — white, with a country scene in green, and a cottage by the side of a dirt road. He thought the place seemed far away, perhaps in an earlier time, and he had sometimes wondered if it were a real place and who lived there. Now, as Grandpa called his attention to two tiny figures on the road, Varun studied them carefully. One was larger than the other, and closer, and had a hat with a big brim, but he couldn’t tell much about them, even which way they were walking. Still frustrated by the fate of his race car, he was not quite ready for one of Grandpa’s goofy jokes.

“Oh sure, that’s you and me,” he muttered.

“You and I,” said Grandpa.

Everyone in the family tried to ignore Grandpa when he fussed about words, and Varun found it easy now. Those plates had been in the cupboard as long as he could remember, and as far as he knew they were there before he was born.

“That’s silly, Grandpa. That plate is too old for me to be in the picture.”

“Don’t be so sure about what you think you see on this plate. That’s a special place, and I’d like to take you there some time.” Grandpa sounded very serious.

“Where is it, then?”
